Utu

five years old
I’m walking around the fallen flowers
of utu trees
to avoid standing on the
the pink-tipped spines
a sickly sweet scent
fills the air
where they danced
the night before
run, never walk
or they will get you
I run all the way home
and I look over my shoulder
to see if they are after me
