Spring Tabir 2004
By Prodruha Nadia Mencinsky

During the October long weekend, CYM Sydney held its first Spring tabir – Tabir Vesna - at Hoverlya, Colo River. The tabir aimed to provide our yunatstvo with memorable and fun experiences based on their Ukrainian heritage, in a family-based Ukrainian environment. The klych of the tabir was ‘Ridna mova, nas yednaye’.

Over 30 yunatstvo attended the vidkryttia, excitedly looking forward to a range of outdoor activities. However, following months of drought, the first full night and day of tabir experienced extremely heavy rain. Participants of the tabir were almost convinced they should rename the tabir - Tabir Dosch!

The day was spent inside the hall, with yunatsvo participating in craft activities organised by Podruha Darka Senko and Belinda Perih, cooking, indoor sport and lessons about CYM, including a profile about Stepan Bandera by Druh Stepan Duma.

The day was topped off with a ‘CYM Idol’ competition. Participants performed their favourite song or dance in front of a panel of judges. Podruhy Briana Berehova, Adriana Wasylyk, Andrea Shmigel and Anastasia Wasylyk charmed the judges and the whole audience with their renditions of pop classics and Ukrainian dance routines! Podruha Halya Hawryliw and Tanya Ilkin were judged more harshly by the judges (starshi yunaky who were ‘stirring the pot’) but were very warmly applauded by the audience.

On Saturday morning, the weather cleared and the participants undertook a 10km bushwalk, under the guidance of Podruhy Natalka and Katya (?) Ostrowski. In the evening, Druh Andriy Mencinsky conducted an astronomy class. Participants were invited to find different constellations through Druh Andriy’s telescope and compete in a mini-quiz. 11 year old Tymish Shmigel won first prize!!

On Sunday, Father Simon conducted a Mass for the campers, explaining to the yunatstvo the meaning behind many of the rites and traditions of the Ukrainian Catholic Mass. Following lunch and a lesson about Ukrainians and the Olympics by Druh Yuriy Mencinsky, the campers participated in their own Mini-Olympics, organised by Druh Petro Shmigel.

The camp closed on Monday afternoon - too soon for many. CYM Sydney would like to thank the Komanda for their tireless work and effort in making the camp a success. Without the voluntary efforts of the Komanda, and the other parents and helpers who assisted, it would be impossible for CYM to continue to provide its members with such rich and valuable experiences.
